About This Item
London: John Lane at The Bodley Head, 1928. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9.5" by 6.5". Frank C. Pape. A smart first UK edition of this illustrated heroic tale from American writer James Branch Cabell. First UK edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, ten plates, illustrated title pages to each book, and maps to the endpapers. Collated complete. Told by his former knights, this story deals with the creation of the legend of Manuel the Redeemer, in which Manuel is pictured as a heroic example to which all others should aspire. However, his knights remember the true story and take different approaches in reconciling the mythology with the actuality of Manuel. Written by James Branch Cabell, an American author of fantasy fiction and belles-lettres. Illustrated by Frank Cheyne Papé, an English artist and illustrator whose career spanned sixty-four years. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light bumping to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot to the endpapers. Very Good
