[viii]+254, frontispiece, the title page printed in red & black; cr. 8vo; school prize binding in half red calf, spine lettered and decorated in gilt between raised bands, red cloth boards with gilt crest and motto of Winchester College at centre of upper board, edges of boards lightly rubbed, fore-corners grazed, the spine slightly faded; t.e.g., others uncut; marbled endpapers, bookplate of Frederick Percival Robinson on upper pastedown, the free endpapers lightly offset, outer leaves and edges slightly foxed, occasional faint soiling; Chatto & Windus, London, 1901. *First published in 1883.
Synopsis
Robert Louis Stevenson wrote The Silverado Squatters as the travel memoir of his honeymoon in California's Napa Valley in 1880. He and his new wife Fanny Vandegrift were unable to pay 10 dollars a week for a local hotel room, so they spent their unconventional honeymoon living in a bunkhouse in an abandoned mining camp named "Silverado". Squatting there for two months of a California summer, they installed makeshift cloth windows and hauled water from a close-by stream. The area they stayed in is now called The Robert Louis Stevenson State Park.
