Half red buckram with black spine, gilt design on black , gilt on front board. 127pp. Coloured frontispiece portrait of Sir Thomas More together with 56 black/white and coloured illustrations throughout the text. SIR THOMAS MORE (1478-1535) was a friend of ERASMUS and became LORD CHANCELLOR under HENRY VIII - but refused to take any oath that would impugn the authority of Rome or recognise the King's divorce from Queen Catherine, and this led to his trial for treason and beheading. ROPER was SIR THOMAS MORE's son-in-law. Book in fine as unread condition in slightly scruffy pink slipcase.; 000569; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
