About This Item

London, England: Penguin Books, 1984. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. London, England: Penguin Books, 1984. Softcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 184 pages. The author's debut novel. One of the most brilliant literary debuts of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in softcover in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent printings, of which there are several. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original as part of "A Penguin Book" Imprint. There is NO American Edition. The First Edition Thus is now rare. Presents Damon Galgut's "A Sinless Season". His original sin: Written in 1980 by the incredibly precocious seventeen-year old novelist and first published by Jonathan Ball in 1982. It is not autobiography, as is typically the case with youthful first novels, but allegory about the "primitive forces that lurk behind the deceptive facade of civilization". As such, it is "a story as powerful and disturbing as 'Lord of The Flies' " (Publisher's blurb) . The latter novel is an unmistakable formative influence on Damon Galgut, who was born to write, has long since found his voice, published eight novels (as of 2021) and a short story collection. This body of work is all the more impressive because by his own admission, Galgut is a slow, painstaking writer, who still writes longhand on notebooks. Until recently, he remained a relatively obscure figure, known to and admired by mainly British and South African readers and fellow writers, who were fortunate to have discovered his work as it unfolded, developed, and matured over time. All that has now changed for good. We have quite a bit of catching up to do with this literary artist who is, indisputably albeit belatedly, the living definition of writer's writer. An absolute "must-have" title for Damon Galgut collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the First Softcover Edition/First Printing (British) still available online and despite its imperfection (wear on fragile softcovers, not terrible as compared to most other copies online, but it's there) is still in near-fine condition overall: Every single internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: There is NO American Edition. A rare copy thus. Shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2003 for "The Good Doctor". Shortlisted for the Booker Prize, yet again, in 2010 for "In A Strange Room". Winner of the Booker Prize, at long last, in 2021 for "The Promise". One of the greatest writers of our time. A near-fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DAMON GALGUT TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 014007077X.
