About This Item
Sydney: William Applegate Gullick, Government Printer, 1909. xxiv, 244 pp. First edition. Octavo. Green boards. Gilt lettering on the spine. An ornate gilt design and lettering on the cover. Trimmed edges. Within, the book has a little bit of handling wear with faint foxing and staining on the extremities of the volume, but it is a clean copy in very good condition. 64 illustrations, including two folding charts and two folding maps. Author J. H. Maiden (1859 â 1925) was a government botanist in New South Wales and the director of the botanic gardens in Sydney. Unsurprisingly, he was very interested in Joseph Banks as a botanist. Along with documenting Banks' travels and explorations, this book focuses on Banks' role as a botanist, and to the horticultural protégés Banks nurtured along with the plants that were such a great part of his life. This book is from the library of Lieutenant Commander Andrew David of the Royal Navy. It has his bookplate on the front free end paper. 1909
