About This Item
London: Octopus/Heinemann, 1976 0706405684. First edition of this short story collection by W. Somerset Maugham. First printing. Hardback. VG/VG. DW is price clipped with one slight nick repaired. It has photo of the author on the back cover. Otherwise intact. 937 pages. Burgundy cloth tall 8vo with gilt titles. These omnibus editions were produced to a high standard of paper and print and have stood the test of time as there is no sign of them browning or ageing in any way. The DW is bright and unclipped and the faux leatherette binding is as good as new with no sign of the gilt lettering fading etc. Stories are complete and unabridged. No annotations or inscriptions. Somerset Maugham was one of the most popular novelists of the 20th century, but is also renowned for his plays and short stories. When he had ceased writing short stories the author made a collection of these 65 that he wished to preserve, and he arranged them in the order he felt to be most agreeable to the reader. Nevertheless, each story can be enjoyably read as a stand-alone piece. Pages bright and clean. These omnibus editions were produced on superior paper which has not aged. .
