1915. Early days in Rush County, IN, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales, factual data and personal biographies in this new 11" x 8.5" spiral-bound book, printed on 60 # opaque paper. The 73-page book is a reprint of the rare 1915 book Sketches of Rush County Indiana, edited by Mary M. Alexander and Capitola Guffin Dill, plus brief excerpts from An Illustrated History of the State of Indiana by DeWitt C. Goodrich et.al. (1875) and Indiana, a Guide to the Hoosier State, a 1941 WPA publication. A vinyl sheet protects the front cover. Among the contents in the first section of the book are: The beginnings of the county -- the Delaware Indians and the murder of Chief Ben Davis; the First Land Office and a description of the life of early settlers; Itinerant ministers; Taverns; Rushville -- newspapers, stores, doctors, lawyers, courts, murder trials, the execution of Edward Swanson; Elections; Schools and Academies; Churches; Orphans' Home; Politics; Banks; Military History -- Revolutionary War pensioners, War of 1812 survivors, Civil War units; Representatives from Rush County to the General Assembly; Railroads; Libraries; and many other miscellaneous items. Besides Rushville, towns mentioned include: Carthage, Milroy, Manilla, Arlington, Glenwood, New Salem, Falmouth, Richland, Homer, and Raleigh. There's also a poem by Anna Clark Urmston called "Be a Booster." Contents of the second section of the book include: a history of Company M, 121st Regiment, 9th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry, which includes many names; a history of the D.A.R. , both nationally and locally; and the linage of the Rushville Chapter members.
