Pesth [Budapest]: Hermann Geibel, 1855. (41 cm x 29 cm), pp. [vii], 106 + 25 vibrantly coloured chromolithograph plates with tissue guards, woodcut vignette to title-page. Original red, morocco grained cloth, title-page vignette repeated in gilt to front cover, gilt lettering, gilt and blind stamped decorative frame to front cover, blind stamped frame to rear cover, all edges gilt. Sympathetically rebacked with original ornate gilt spinestrip laid on, corners strengthened. Light shelf wear to edges, some soiling to covers; interior has minor offsetting from plates and a couple of minor stains or smudges in the margins only, otherwise a very good copy of this scarce book. Extremely important for its accurate depiction of the people of Hungary, their activities, costume, etc, during the early 19th-century. The brilliantly coloured plates include: 1) Hochzeits-Zug zur Trauung. A'juhász. Le berger; 6) Rindviehhirt. Gulyás. Bouvier; 7) Büffelhirt. Bivaly-csordás. Pâtre gardant les buffles; 8) Rofshirt. Csikós. Pâtre gardant les chevaux; 9) Schweinhirt. Kondás. Le porcher; 10) Wandernde Zigeuner. Vándor ezigány-telep. Bohémiens vagabonds; 11) Ofner Winzerfest. Budai szüret-tor. La fête des vignerons à Bude; 12) Hasenhetze. Agarászat. Courre le lièvre; 13) Trappen-Jagd. Túzok-vadászat. Chasse à l'outarde; 14) Theissfischerei. Tiszai halászat. La pêche de la Theiss; 15) Drathbinder. Drotos-tót. Le chaudronnier ambulant; 16) Der Ölbauer. Az olaj-árus. Le marchand d'huile; 17) Wallachische Fuhrleute. Oláh szekeres. Rouliers valaques; 18) Gänsetreiber. Lúd-hajtsár. Meneur d'oies; 19) Spinnstube. Fonoka. La chambre ou l'on file; 20) Die Dorfgerichtsbarkeit. A' falusi tanács. Le Tribunal villageois; 21) Die Bauerntrachten. Népviselet. Costumes de paysans. (Walachen-Oláhok. Ungarn-Magyarok. Slaven-Tótok. Deutsche-Németek.); 22) Heide. Puszta. Landes, ou la Steppe; 23) Pesther Melonen-Markt. Pesti dinnye-vásár. Marché aux melons; 24) Wassermann. Dunaviz hordogató. Le porteur d'eau.; and 25) Die Garküche. Laczi konyhája. La gargote. Due to the technical limitations in Hungary at the time, especially with regard to the coloured plates, the book was printed by Giesecke & Devrient in Leipzig, Germany, and the lithographs by Institut von Arnz & Comp. in Dusseldorf. Colas 2430; Lipperheide 896. A complete copy was last seen at auction in 1977. . Hard Cover. Very Good. Folio.

The contents with a previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown and a little spotting to the endpapers, are otherwise clean and fresh throughout. A superb example of a very scarce title. 8vo (21.8 x 15.7 cm). Publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles and decoration to the upper board and spine, gilt to all page edges. Illustrated with 20 mounted albumen prints. FIRST EDITION of one of the earliest works of poetry to be illustrated by photography. The anthology combines extracts from authors including Keats, Clare, Wordsworth, Cowper, and Longfellow, with mounted photographs depicting idyllic scenes of contemporary rural life by the renowned stereographer William Morris Grundy (1806-1859), to create a harmonious interweaving of verse and imagery. Grundy was born in Birmingham, moving to Sutton Coldfield in 1850. Initially taking up photography as a hobby in 1855, he went on to achieve…
