About This Item

London: Oxford University Press, 1951. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Near fine/very good. Signed first edition of A Sleep of Prisoners by Christopher Fry.. Small octavo, [viii], 51pp. Black cloth, title in gilt on spine. Solid text block, gilt fading slightly along spine, touch of rubbing to corners. Faint toning to endpapers, otherwise a near fine example. In the publisher's dust jacket, retail price on front flap, archival tape on verso, some light wear and chipping to corners. Cover art remains clean and dark. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper. A Sleep of Prisoners is a poetic drama that explores the psychological and spiritual struggles of four prisoners during World War II. The play delves into themes of faith, redemption, and the human condition as the characters grapple with their inner demons while confined in a church during an air raid.
