Łódź: Wolna drukarnia MSW, [1988]. Single sheet, xerox-printed to recto, measuring 36 × 25.5 cm. About very good; old creases. Apparently unrecorded poster for a series of "manic" political happenings slash performances held at the Galeria Działań Maniakalnych in Łódź, a branch of the Pomarańczowa Alternatywa (Orange Alternative), an originally Wroclaw-based anti-communist artist group. The movement was born out of the student protests at Wroclaw in the early 1980s, and its leader was Waldemar Fydrych (born 1953). It is perhaps best known for painting little orange gnomes over Solidarity and other anti-State graffiti that had been painted over by the authorities. Never an explicitly political movement, the Orange Alternative instead fused elements of surrealism and dadaism with urban protest in the tradition of Dutch Provo and the kabouters. DIY xerox punk aesthetic, with a drawing showing a bearded male making love to a five-pronged star. As of November 2019, we are unable to trace other copies. See also: Happening Against Communism by the Orange Alternative, Kraków: International Cultural Centra, 2011.

Suncook, Pembroke, N.H., 1878. 12mo, original russet cloth, gilt title and decorative black stamping on front cover, lower cover with blind-stamped title and ornament. Frontis. portrait engraving, 63 pp., illus. On the morning of October 4, 1875, the beautiful 17-year-old Josie Langmaid did not show up for school. When Pembroke Academy staff notified her family, a search party was assembled. That night the party found her decapitated and violated body in the woods near the school and discovered her head the next morning. Following the initial arrest of innocent parties, the actual murderer was identified as French-Canadian woodcutter Joseph Lapage. Tried and found guilty, he admitted to his crime (as well as a similar murder in Vermont) on March 15th, 1878 and was hung the following day. The town of Pembroke placed a monument to the victim near the murder site, with directions to the sites where her body and head were discovered. Keeler's forty-page poetic eulogy is preceded by a brief account of… Read More
