About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. Hardcover. Small 4to. Black cloth with gilt spine lettering and large color plate to front board. x, 263pp. Color frontispiece, 14 called-for full-page plates (some color), pictorial endpapers. Near fine. Nonauthorial gift inscription on front flyleaf; touch of foxing to gutter of both endpapers. Attractive, tight and nice later printing of the "Illustrated Classics Edition for Younger Readers" edition of James' best known work. The Newbery Medal-winning 1926 children's book was the basis for three film versions, and this unique copy bears fine autograph additions from two of the stars who portrayed lead character Clint Barkley. Neatly tipped to blank leaf facing half-title page is a 4¼" X 3" photocopy of a still scene (not "Smoky"), at center of which is boldly penned "Sincerely / Fred / Mac / Murray" in his trademark green ink. Below this is a heavy stock 5" X 3" card inscribed and signed "Best Wishes / Richard / Fess Parker" in black fineline, dated by him 12 August 1987 at upper right. FRED MacMURRAY (1908-91) starred in the 1946 version of "Smoky" and FESS PARKER (1924-2010) in the 1966 version. Laid in is the perfect bookmark: Parker's original transmittal envelope.

Synopsis

Smoky the Cowhorse is a novel by Will James that was the winner of the 1927 Newbery Medal. The story details the life of a horse in the western United States from his birth to his eventual decline. Smoky is born in the wild, but is captured and trained by a cowboy named Clint. Smoky is unusually intelligent, and soon becomes known as the best cowhorse around, and later is known as "The Cougar", the meanest bucking horse on the rodeo circuit.
