About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. Illustrated Classics Edition. Hardcover. 263pp. Quarto [24 cm] Black cloth covered boards with a gilt stamped title on the spine, and an illustrated paper label mounted to the front board. Illustrated endpapers. Very good. The extremities are gently bumped and rubbed. The spine is rolled, and the covers are very subtly concave. The gilt title on the spine has been partially rubbed away. The illustrated paper label on the front cover is a little scratched. There are 3 small spots on the spine, and there are multiple small light stains on the edges of the text block. There is a contemporary gift inscription on the front pastedown, and there is an old price sticker on the rear pastedown. The pages are yellowed, and have very sporadic small light stains. Illustrated by the Author. Born in Canada, Ernest DuFault left home at the age of 15 and traveled west to seek out his dream. He became the American cowboy, Will James. Beginning at the bottom, he worked and became a top hand. Handling rough horses filled his days and became the basis for many of his books.

Synopsis

Smoky the Cowhorse is a novel by Will James that was the winner of the 1927 Newbery Medal. The story details the life of a horse in the western United States from his birth to his eventual decline. Smoky is born in the wild, but is captured and trained by a cowboy named Clint. Smoky is unusually intelligent, and soon becomes known as the best cowhorse around, and later is known as "The Cougar", the meanest bucking horse on the rodeo circuit.
