Michael Joseph,, [1946]. 8vo., First Edition thus, with title and text in blue and black, coloured frontispiece, 3 coloured plates and numerous monochrome illustrations (3 full-page) in the text; handsomely bound in full navy crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, upper board inlaid with snow goose motif, gilt edges, hand-made endpapers, ribbon marker, in custom-made-slip-case, an elegant copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. FIRST APPEARANCE OF SCOTT'S CLASSIC ILLUSTRATED EDITION. The frontispiece portrait of Fritha is modelled on Scott's first wife, novelist Elizabeth Jane Howard: 'I stood for hours, holding a pillow, which he turned into the wounded snow goose' (Howard's memoirs).
