About This Item

Liberty Fund, (n.d). Octavo, softbound (slick, photo. illustrated stiff wrappers), xxiv + 569 pp. Fine (As New). From lower cover: “Socialism promised to fulfill our hopes for a more rational, more just world. And then came this book. Our hopes were dashed. Socialism told us that we had been looking for improvement in the wrong direction.” -- F. A. Hayek, from the Foreword. Hayek spoke for an entire generation. When it was first published in German in 1922, Socialism ran counter to virtually all current economic thought. Mises presented a wide-ranging analysis of society and all the attempts to improve it, comparing the results of socialist planning with those of free-market capitalism in respect to property, equality, law, science, religion, morals, race, democracy, the state, utopia, war, slavery, monopoly, competition, labor, capital, the family, marriage, and other issues. The Liberty Fund edition of Socialism, with added annotation, is the definitive refutation of virtually every form of socialism ever devised. Hayek went on to say that “Socialism has more immediate application to contemporary events than it had when it first appeared.” Ludwig von Mises was the leading exponent of the Austrian School of economics throughout most of the twentieth century. He has long been regarded as a most knowledgeable and respected economist, even though his teachings were generally outside the mainstream. He wrote twenty-five books and hundreds of articles on human action, free markets, and political economy.
