The first edition.Bound by Period Bookbinder's, Bath, in a lovely half calf with marbled paper-covered boards.Complete in three volumes. One of the earliest accounts of American life and culture, with observations on a variety of important subjects, including politics, the economy, slavery, religion and marriage, and many others. Written by English social theorist and acclaimed translator, Harriet Martineau. Known for her fervent opposition to slavery, Martineau criticised those who were involved in this through her writing. Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. Externally, lovely, with a little fading to the spines. Endpapers have been renewed with original blanks retained. Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
