About This Item
Hardcover. Near Fine. Illustrated with full-page portrait of a cavalier, 13 woodcuts in text, 26 letter diagrams of troop formations (one full-page). 8vo. Bound in stiff vellum, leather label on spine. Venice: Appresso Gabriel Giolito di Ferrarii, 1570. (Colophon: In Venetia: per Giouan Griffio, 1569). First Edition, second issue, of Moras illustrated handbook on the training of the perfect soldier. (Adams M-1738; Bongi II, pp. 300-304; Breman 218; Cockle 539; Jähns 726 & 820; Jordan 2598; Mortimer 314; Riccardi II,182; Spaulding & Karpinski 29.) The book discusses the duties of a commander and his senior officers, infantry tactics and battle orders, fortifications, and plans for siege craft and guarding a conquered city. Domenico Mora fought for the King of Poland in his campaigns against the Ottoman Turks. John Smith indirectly fought for the Polish King when he fought for Sigismund Bathory, Prince of Transylvania, some years after Moras death. Certainly some of the officers trained by Mora were involved in the campaigns in which Smith fought in Eastern Europe, and are responsible for the expert military training that served him well in Virginia, New England and elsewhere. Light foxing to title page and first few pages; lacking front endpapers, o/w Fine.
