About This Item

Pages are clear and readable and are in excellent condition; minor wear on the covers and the spine. This is a story about my journey from Boyhood to Manhood, Oct 14, 1942, to Oct. 28, 1945. It describes my experiences in the U.S. Army during that time, including basic training, specialized school, Atlantic crossing, Camp in England, Landing on Omaha Beach in June 1944, various battles we participated in, and the end of my war in Germany after the surrender of Japan. Also included is my recovery from severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and an essay written after a return visit to Omaha Beach in 1985. About the Author Roger Aldrich, born a few years after the end of WW 1, was brought up in a tiny hamlet in northern New Hampshire during the 1920s and 30s. He enlisted in the US Army on Oct. 14, 1942, while he was in his sophomore year at Northeastern University in Boston. Soldiering...Yesterday is the story of his experiences from enlistment to his discharge in Oct. 1945. Roger was and is a keen observer of events, people, places, and things. He writes in an easy, conversational style. After returning home, he attended Northeastern University for one semester but found that he could not concentrate on his studies and dropped out. In 1949 he married Nancy Dexter and moved into a small house on Hildex Farm in Sugar Hill, NH. Nancy Dexter Aldrich operated a small tea room that she had acquired from her parents, Polly's Pancake Parlor. Roger spent 20 years working in a printing/publishing house in Sugar Hill and acquired knowledge of the publishing business in all it's forms. In 1973 Roger left the publishing business and became a full-time partner in Polly's Pancake Parlor and helped build that business into a remarkably successful operation. In 1962 Roger was instrumental in forming a new municipality, the town of Sugar Hill, the first new town in New Hampshire in over 100 years. He spent his spare time over the next 25 years in the position of "Selectman" learning the business of running a town. Due to the seasonal nature of their restaurant, Roger and Nancy have time to travel during the winter and early spring and have traveled extensively since 1980. Roger is at present semi-retired and enjoys many hobbies including Ship Modelling, Model Railroad, Military Miniatures (high-class toy soldiers) which he paints in authentic regimental colors, Static Model Airplanes, sailing a 12-foot sail boat which he built himself, and writing. He has written four books to date and is working on a fifth. He also enjoys chatting in a chat group with friends from all over North America. You might bump into him if you go online and go to ThirdAge.com. His handle is "basil2".
