[iv]+iv+viii+200+12+201-452pp, 5 engraved plates, 2 folding plates, 3 folding charts, text figs & charts, upper cover detached & spine defective, occasional foxing, but a nice copy. The Quarterly Journal Of Science, Literature And The Arts Volume XII [ 12 ] N° XXIII [ 23 ] & N° XXIV [ 24 ]. Faraday's papers occupy pp 74 - 96 of N° XXIII & pp 283 - 285 of N° XXIV [ 24 ], in them he is the first to describe the conversion of electrical & magnetic forces into mechanical movement - the basis of the electro magnetic motor. Two plates accompany his papers, one showing his aparatus. The book also contains a paper by E W A Hay 'On An Ancient Monument Of Sculpture In Stone representing The Theban Sphinx, Which was Recently Discovered At Colchester In Essex' which is illustrated with 4 fine plates. Also a separately paginated 12pp paper, with its own title page - 'An Answer To The Accusations And Aspersions Of Mr Richard Phillips FRS Which Were Published In A Letter Addressed To Mr Parkes in The Twenty Second Number Of The Journal Of Science, Literature And The Arts'

A fine book will look almost like the day it was bought, a VG one will have some evidence of prior ownership, G means a nice clean copy, obviously secondhand & P implies a COMPLETE copy that has suffered a hard life & will need some TLC. We take into account the books age when grading, so a 250 year old book graded as VG will look more second hand that a 5 year old book graded the same. On the Net since 1998. All prices are in GBP.
