About This Item
(Craighall: Ad Donker, 1986) 0868520942. 8vo; original green boards, lettered in white on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 228, incl. index; black-and-white illustrations. Dustwrapper partially sunned, slightly rubbed and edgeworn; merest trace of foxing to edges and reverse of free endpapers. Very good condition. Sir Lionel Phillips (1855-1936) typified the self-made men who were at the forefront of South Africa's boom following the discovery of diamond and gold deposits in the late 1800s. He was a close associate of Wernher and Beit. At the heart of affairs at the time of the Jameson Raid, Phillips was sentenced to death by Kruger's government, but the sentence was softened. "Having published Some reminiscences (London, 1924), Phillips formally retired in 1925. ... On his death The Cape Argus stated in a leading article: 'If he had any enemies at all, they would be the first to admit that Sir Lionel was a very gallant gentleman who retained his ideals to the end of his long life and employed great talents to the advantage of his country.'" - DSAB II, pp. 245-6 .
