New York: Putnam's, 1901. 1st. HB. Blue cloth, gilt lettering on spine and front cover, 8vo., 167pp. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed to William F. Vilas,Civil War Lt. Col., U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, Post Master General and Secretary of the Interior in Cleveland's cabinet, with his private bookplate. Author was the wife of the 7th President of the University of Wisconsin, and Vilas was a member of the trustees of the university. Tipped in is a scarce copy of a poem, The Message of the Dead, by Adams, privately printed, and presented on Memorial Day, 1895, at Madison Wisconsin, and dedicated to the officers and men of the C. C. Washburn Post, G.A.R. In wraps, unpaginated [10pp]. Book condition VG.
