London: Published by J. Mawman, 1825. [8], 260pp. With half-title. Contemporary brown crushed morocco, richly gilt. Spine worn, lettering-piece lacking, slight cracks to upper joint. The first edition of Sarah Hamilton's (c.1769-1843) first work, Sonnets includes the eight-verse 'The Negro maid', opening with a lament from 'the negro maiden, as she from slavery fled'. Poetry aside, this debut work might also be considered as travel literature; in 'Recollections of Scotland' are included several explanatory prefaces with geographical notes, featuring, amongst others, 'Tomna-Heurich, or the Hill of Fairies, Inverness' and 'The Weiard Sisters'.
