About This Item

Sydney.: Flamingo. HarperCollins.. 1st English language edition.. 2000.. Translated by Mabel Lee. xi + 510pp + [6]pp, appendix, paperback. Signed by the translator Mabel Lee on the title page. Remainder mark lower edge, upper edge very lightly browned. Very good copy. First published under the title 灵山 (Lingshan) in Taiwan in 1990 it was not until 10 years later that this important novel was published in English. This is a copy of the very scarce world first English language edition published in Sydney. It was due to the influence of the translator, Australian scholar, Mabel Lee, held with HarperCollins Australia that Soul Mountain was published in English, albeit in a very small print run. Very shortly after it was published in Australia Gao Xingjian won the Nobel Prize for Literature after which Soul Mountain was published in much larger print runs throughout the world. Scarce first edition of this important novel. .

Synopsis

Soul Mountain is a novel by 2000 Nobel Prize winning Chinese author Gao Xingjian, first published in Chinese in 1990. It was first published in the United States in English in December 5, 2000, and was translated by Mabel Lee. The novel is a product of the author's journey in rural areas of China, inspired by a false diagnosis of fatal lung cancer. The novel is a part autobiographical, part fictional account of a man's journey to find the fabled mountain Lingshan.
