The tragic tale of the Compson family, certainly counted as a masterpiece of the Southern Gothic tradition, and an essential development in the stream-of-consciousness narrative technique. Faulkner's fourth novel refuses any simple synopsis or definition -- and likewise its attempted adaptation to the screen. Though Faulkner enjoyed success writing for Hollywood, the attempt by Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank bore little resemblance to the original tour de force.
