About This Item

Boston: Atlantic Monthly Press/ Little Brown, 1963. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR at front end page -" To Beth and Jim Armsey - With my appreciation and best wishes - and, of course, with further appreciation of serving with J.A. on the Board - Ralph McGill New York April 22, 1963". Important Civil Rights Association Copy. James Armsey, ( 1918-2008) was the Ford Foundation executive who oversaw grants to universities and colleges in the 1960s, with the only requirement that they had to raise matching funds from other sources. At his urging the Foundation added the requirement that the colleges and universities could not bar black students. This change caused a number of them, including Duke University, Vanderbilt University, Emory University, Tulane University, and several major private colleges, to admit black students for the first time. The "Board" referenced in the inscription was Ford Foundation Board for the Advancement of Education. Ralph McGill (1898-1969) was an anti-segregationist editor and publisher of the Atlanta Constitution newspaper. He was a member of the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors, serving from 1945 to 1968, and won a Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing in 1959. Very Good, brown stains at spine, Armsey and his wife's signature in ink front paste down, hidden by front flap, marginal lines and underlining in red and black pencil. In a Very Good dust jacket, light edge wear. . SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Association Copy.
