The Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition, commonly known as the Spanish Inquisition, was established in 1478 by the Catholic Monarchs,King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile. Ever since the 16thC,the Inquisition has been held synonymous with terror, bigotry and persecution, and distorted views of its activities persist today.A judicial institution that lasted between 1478 to 1834. Its ostensible purpose was to combat heresy in Spain, but,in practice,it resulted in consolidating power in the monarchy of the newly unified Spanish kingdom. Its brutal methods led to widespread death and suffering. Broadly defined as operating in Spain and in all Spanish colonies and territories, which included the Canary Islands, the Kingdom of Naples and all Spanish possessions in North,Central, and South America. Henry Kamen's first study of the Inquisition, published in 1965,quickly became established as the best introduction to one of the most notorious institutions in western history.
