London: John Murray, 1863. First edition. With a folding engraved frontispiece (a little worn and marked, and poorly folded, a little fraying at the margins), eight other plates, 12 illustrations within the text, a folding map at the rear in good condition, octavo, pp xvi, 395, endpapers rarther soiled, title page thumbed and age-toned, contemporaqry half morocco and marbled boards, the paper cover to the boards worn through in places, the leather only a little rubbed. From the library of Compton House, Liverpool, with their stamp on the spine, a label and stamp on the front endpaper, and a few stamps throughout. Unfortunately, a previous owner has started to try and erase the stamps and has got to work on the title page, the next page and the first page of text with the result that there is considerable loss of surface to the page and in one case an actual hole; fortunately common-sense, exhaustion or death interrupted them - it would have been better if they had not started their labours. Vindobonae [Vienna]: Joannis Thomae Trattner, 1764. Editio Tertia. Two volumes, thick octavo, pp (14), 1682, 64, (i), slight age-toning but otherwise remarkably clean and tight internally, full polished calf (probably contemporary), a little scuffed and bumped, spines a little creased with slight wear and pulling at the head and foot, raised bands to the spine with green leather labels, with the bookplate of Kenneth Lazenby, an early founder of the Alpine Garden Society. Overall a remarkably good set. [This the third edition of the Species Plantarum; the first edition of 1753 was the first botanical work to consistently apply the binomial nomenclature system of naming to any large group of organisms. Because it is the first work in which binomial nomenclature was consistently applied, Species Plantarum was chosen as the "starting point" for the nomenclature of most plants (the nomenclature of some non-vascular plants and all fungi uses later starting points). [Soulsby 510 - A reprint of the second edition, with the ommission of the errata pages which are now corrected in the text; though our copy has the single page errata associated with this edition. ].[Stafleu 4826 - Probably edited by N.J. Jacquin who brought about a few minor changes.]. Third edition. Full-Leather. Very Good.
