Boston: Lothrop Publishing Company, 1902. First Edition ("10th Thousand"). Cloth. Very Good/Custom Clear Mylar. (viii) (1) 512 pp. Illustrated from drawings by "O'Neill Latham" (Rose O'Neill). Original illustrated red cloth. 5 1/4" x 7 3/4". POS in pencil, dated 1902. Author Harry Leon Wilson ("Ruggles of Red Gap"; "Merton of the Movies") was an early resident of Carmel-By-The-Sea, California, when that village was populated by Bohemian artists and writers, including Mary Austin, George Sterling and Xavier Martinez. Illustrator/Cartoonist Rose O'Neill was married to Wilson (1902-1907) and illustrated four of his books, including this one. O'Neill went on to create the"Kewpie" for the Ladies Home Journal in 1909. "Kewpie Dolls" were very popular bisque dolls modeled after O'Neill's creation. Wilson was the father of Charis Wilson, who was married to Carmel photographer Edward Weston and was his model in countless photographs. The Spenders was made into a silent film in 1921. A Very Good copy (rubbed; spine darkened; edgewear, particularly at the spine-ends), and now in a custom clear mylar protective jacket. Description:
Some wear, mainly at the corners. Red fabric may be a little faded, can't be sure. Pages are clean and tight, with no marks other than a name inside the front cover. Wilson is best known for his book Ruggles of Red Gap, which was made into a movie. This book is his first published novel. It must have done well, as this is from the 21st printing (One Hundred and Twenty-seventh Thousand). In spite of 21 or more printings, few copies are on the market today. At the time of the first publication, Wilson had been the editor of Puck Magazine for six years. He left that to become a full-time writer. Harry Wilson was also the father of Charis Wilson, whose Cats of Wildcat Hill can be found elsewhere in this store.
