About This Item

Lincoln Nebraska and London: University of Nebeska Press - A Bison Book, 1971. Second Bison Book Printing . Trade Paperback. Very Good. 5 1/4" x 7 3/4. 290 Pages. Tight clean book with minor wear to cover edges and corners. No marks or stamps. Interior text pages are flawless. The official explores of the Northwest and the Soutwest were pioneers but the official exploration of the great central region beyond the Rockies was undertaken 20 years after the actual discoverers and explorers had set out from St. Louis. Condsidering the fact that it was by way of the central route that the tide of migration flowed across the Rockies and possessed the Far west, it would seem that the discovery and exploraiton of that route should receive some attention. This is the story of that body of adventurers who, from 1822 to 1829, opened the way for the expansion of our nation beyond the Missouris. Jedediah Smith is the central figure of this story, for of all explorers of the Great West he was in many ways the most remarkable, The story begins with the movemenet across the Alleghenies and down the Ohio River after the Revolutinary War. Included is a comprehensive bibliograpohy.
