About This Item
Seacaucus, NJ: Ridge Press / Pound Books, (1974.) 1st edition. An anthology of wilderness writing and nature photography. Signed by American photojournalist Frederick C. Baldwin (1929-2021), who was one of the contributors. With a brief presentation inscription to Mike Matzkin (1924-2022), an author and former editor at Modern Photography magazine who was later an executive at Canon USA. A notable copy linking two important figures in American photography. In a long and varied career, Fred Baldwin's subjects ranged from Pablo Picasso to the Korean war to wildlife in the Arctic Circle. He is best known for his work documenting the civil rights movement and rural poverty in the American South. Along with his wife and fellow photographer Wendy Watriss, he founded the biennial FotoFest international photography event in Houston. Baldwin's contributions to this book were: "Quail, Old Plantation Style" (text and photographs); and "Nahnook: The Great White Hunter" (photographs.) The anthology consists of 20 articles in all that were originally published in The American Sportsman, a journal devoted to "the literature of the rod, the gun, and the campfire." Large hardcover in dust jacket. 11.5 x 8.5 inches. 253 pp., with color and b&w photographs throughout. VG with sound, tight binding. No tears or other flaws to the jacket, which is protected by a clear archival cover. Signed in ink on the dark blue endpaper, "To Mike Matzkin / with many thanks / Fred Baldwin." (Despite a long life and career, books signed by Baldwin are uncommon.)
