About This Item

St. Paul's Bibliographies, Winchester, first edition, 1990. Cloth, 8vo, 25 cm,. xlviii, 376 pp, ills, facs. From the blurb - "Used by scholars world-wide. the Stationers' Company archive is the longest unbroken run of booktrade records in existence, A book about the archive was long overdue, a sequel as it were to Blagden's definitive history of the Company. Robin Myers' work was originally planned as a brief guide to the Chadwyck-Healey microfilm but over the years it has grown into a major study of the Company's records in its own right. It is the culmination of many years spent in sorting, arranging and listing the records which has also involved a great deal of research in other libraries and archives including the British Library, Guildhall, the Bodleian. Cambridge University, St Andrews University and elsewhere. The book consists of an introductory essay on the history of the archives and the use that scholars from 1749 to the present day have made of it. followed by a glossary of terms, the first complete listing of the 550 volumes in the muniment room (this has not been done before) and two registers of supplementary documents. The first register consists of some 15,000 miscellaneous documents compiled by Robin Myers and includes material which had long since been lost sight of. but were happened upon in the aftermath of a fire bomb raid in October 1940: the second register is of legal documents compiled by' Major A. C. S. Hall. This is an essential reference book for librarians, scholars and those interested in the history of the book trade." With a name index by Peter Isaac. A presentation copy from and inscribed by the publisher Robert Cross to the designer Iain Bain "Iain, with grateful thanks for all you did to make this a handsome volume, Robert" and with a TLS from Cross to Bain laid in. Near Fine in Very Good dustwrapper.
