About This Item

Cincinnati: J. A. James, 1836. First Printing. Hardcover. Good. Small 8vo, publisher's plum cloth boards, recent cloth over spine, light restoration to inner hinges, contents very good, light toning and foxing, 1887 inscription on flyleaf and old owner's name on title page: W. R. Gormly. 284 pp, 2 pp. ads. A statistical and anecdotal analysis of commerce, trade, agriculture, business opportunities of the Midwest, the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, the prairies, etc. A published report from 1846 of agents superintending the mineral lands around Lake Superior noted that W. R. Gormly of Pittsburgh is one of a number of people who staked out a claim for land in the mineral districts and lost money in the venture. That's all we know about him. The book is rare in commerce and infrequent at auction: Swann sold a copy for $200 in 1999 with "backstrip faded" and a similar copy sold at Sotheby's in 1981 for $125. Howes H79; Graff 1739.
