About This Item
Houghton Mifflin, 1959-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good+. Hardcover, First Edition-First Printing 1959, Houghton Mifflin Company, 171 pages. Very Good, in Good+ Dust Jacket. Black boards with white titles, just a touch of shelf/edge wear- top right corner lightly bumped. Red topstain to text block. Prior owner name in ink on ffep. Interior pages are tight and unmarred except for a small darkened smudge near the upper outer edge of the text block which extends onto the outer margin of pages 110 and 112 -the text is not affected. DJ is unclipped, with moderate rubbing and soiling and a few tiny chips and closed tears along the folds and edges - now in mylar. In a brilliant though controversial analysis of modern literature/culture Wilson examines the disappearance of the hero and his replacement by a character without faith in either himself or in society. He then persuasively argues against the automatic assumption that belief in oneself is a form of self-delusion. An offering for anyone who still believes or wants to believe in the dignity and potential of human beings. LOC SSS-17
