About This Item

The First edition published by M'Arte Edizione, Milano, Italy in 1974. Folio size. The BOOK is complete and is in near Fine condition. Number '108' of 133 copies issued (There were also an additional X1V hors commerce ad personal copies issued). Loose gatherings in wrappers, with a board chemise folder and slipcase as issued. Edition composed in Garamond font by Ruggero Olivieri, Milan and printed by Tipografia Stefanoni, Lecco on handmade paper by Filicarta di Brugherio. The original manuscript by Beckett is reproduced in facsimile. This is signed (without dedication) at the end by Samuel Beckett. This is followed by the printed text Italian and English. The translation is by Luigi Majno. Abraham Jacob Leventhal provides biographical pieces on both Samuel Beckett and Stanley William Hayter. These again are in Italian and English. These are accompanied by a photo of Beckett in black and white by Henri Cartier-Bresson and one of Hayter. There are three original coloured etchings by acclaimed British artist Stanley William Hayter within individual titled gatherings. Each has been signed and numbered in pencil by the artist and dated 1973. These three etchings are all numbered '108/133'. The etchings are all in Fine condition, measuring overall size: 30 x 40.5 cm with the image size: 22 x 30 cm. The outer slipcase and chemise cover has some very minor scuff marks. The last gathering with the 'Colofon' has some light spotting at the bottom of the page which is more pronounced on the unprinted blank verso. The rest of the contents are in fine condition. Stanley William Hayter CBE (1901 1988) was an English painter and printmaker associated in the 1930s with surrealism and from 1940 onward with abstract expressionism. He is regarded as one of the most significant printmakers of the 20th century. In 1927 Hayter founded the legendary 'Atelier 17 Studio' in Paris. Among the artists who frequented the atelier were Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Wassily Kandinsky et al. Hayter has representation at the Tate and in 2005 the Tate Archive acquired Hayter's papers. A very handsome production of one of the later works from the Irish Nobel Laureate, enhanced by the three striking etchings. A very scarce title to find in such collectible condition. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
