About This Item

(Bloemfontein: National Museum, 1972). National Museum Memoir No. 6. Edition limited to 1000 copies. 4to; original green cloth, lettered in black on upper cover; pp. vii + (i) + 288; numerous line drawings, tables, maps. Fore-corners of boards a bit bumped; a little foxing to endpapers and edges, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Good to very good condition. 'The primary aim of this work is to integrate the sequence of "industries" (groups of similar samples) from the O.R. Scheme area with the sequence of industries established for Southern Africa as a whole. The groups with which the work is concerned are: the Acheulian, the "Fauresmith", the "Middle Stone Age" sequence, and the "Later Stone Age" sequence, each of which forms the subject of a separate chapter. The task of the individual chapters falls into four sections: an appraisal of the state of knowledge of the industry and particularly the validity of present terminology of the industry and its "variants"; a synthesis of the data obtained from the O.R. Scheme, using statistical tests to compare the different samples; a survey of the published data from sites elsewhere in Southern Africa, and a quantitative analysis of those samples which I have been able to examine at first hand; and finally an examination of the similarities and differences between the O.R. Scheme samples and those from elsewhere, again using statistical tests where possible. The final chapter attempts to summarise the conclusions to be drawn from the results of the preceding chapters and it discusses the extent to which the O.R. Scheme research has altered the state of knowledge of the Stone age sequence in Southern Africa.' .
