About This Item

Sunnyside, Orpington, Kent: George Allen, 1884. vi, 302; 360 pp. 18 x 12.5 cm. Full polished calf prize binding with school coat of arms and motto stamped in gilt on boards, gilt tooling and titling to spines, all edges gilt. Some rubbing to spines and extremities of boards, with a bit of light wear to head of spines. Ex praemio, or prize order plate, on front pastedown of the first volume, which is dated 1884. Occasional and fairly sparse spots of foxing scattered throughout. Interiors clean and unmarked. Bindings firm. A lovely 2 volume prize binding that was awarded in 1884 by C.K Probert to a student for their collection of wild flowers at Newport Grammar School in Essex. The school was founded in 1588, and is now called Joyce Frankland Academy after its namesake, who originally founded it as the "free Grammer Schole of Newport". With the curious motto of "Suffer and Serve", the school has had a small number of notable students, such as actor James Frain, novelist Kate Johnson, and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The binding has been signed with the name Relfe Brothers, who were publishers as well as providers of school and college prizes in Aldersgate, London. . Hard Cover. Very Good.
