New York: The Modern Library / Random House. Good with no dust jacket. [c.1942]. Hardcover. A Modern Library edition offering 23 of the Russian physician/playwright/author's best short stories. Edited, and with an introduction by Robert S. Linscott. --- In Toledano spine 8, w/red cloth-covered boards, gilt titling on black spine & cover blocks, black topstain, grey Kent endpapers. Likely published c.1942 (though 1932 date appears in book). Lacks the dust jacket. ML #50.4. --- Good only copy. Binding is partially split, page 439/440 has been torn out and is missing (in middle of story "Rothchild's Fiddle"); spine and cover with fading and dampstains. Interior w/prior owner's bookplate and inked info. at front endpapers. Volume is otherwise tightly bound and lacks additional interior markings.; 12mo (7 to 7-1/2 in. tall) ; 448 pages .
