About This Item

London: David Nutt, 1894. Very good plus.. First edition thus, in which the evocative Macedonian leader from antiquity receives a late Victorian update in this children's telling, beautifully illustrated by Mason with a consciously antiquarian flair. Clearly influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement, as well as William Morris's application of Pre-Raphaelite philosophy to bookmaking, Mason's illustrations bring together a lavish Victorian aesthetic with elements of Renaissance-era woodcuts. The full-page images evoke the Kelmscott Press, while the tailpieces hearken back to Elizabethan printers. A lovely production. 8.5'' x 7''. Original tan pictorial cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Edges uncut. Illustrated by Mason in black and white with six full-page images and numerous historiated initials, head-, and tailpieces. xiv, 226 pages. Previous owner bookplate to front pastedown; evidence of bookplate removal to rear pastedown; unobtrusive numerical owner stamp on a couple pages. Hinges unobtrusively repaired, else a bright, clean copy with very little wear.
