About This Item

Atlanta: Atlantic Steel Company, 1951. Hardcover. Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. 177pp. Illustrations. Very good. Faint binding edgewear, with bit of cloth flecking along spine -- else internally tight and near fine; faint floral mustiness. Tight, nice first edition of this 50th anniversary text. Tipped to front flyleaf is a glossy 8vo program for the February 1963 dedication and opening of Dixisteel's new "35" Blooming Mill" steel mill and name tag for an attendeelaid in is a special printed bookmark presenting this copy of Stone's book and bearing his facsimile signature. In addition, tipped opposite half-title page is a Typed Note Signed from steel bigwig Clarence B. Randall, 1p, 7¼" X 10½", Chicago, IL, 25 May 1965. Addressed to Kenneth N. Anglemire. Near fine. On "Inland Steel Company" letterhead, this former company president and chairman of the board thanks the publisher of "Who's Who in America" for "inviting me to join in the observation of Illinois Day on June 16th" at the New York World's Fair. "I am highly diverted at the topic chosen for the program, and wish that I might join you under these unusual circumstances, but I shall have to be candid and say that I cannot come." Boldly signed in full. Randall (1891-1967) not only served Inland Steel Company from 1925 to 1956, but acted as steel industry spokesman during the famed 1952 steel disputes and also acted as advisor to Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy.
