About This Item

San Francisco, CA, New York & London: Published for The Panama-Pacific International Exposition Co., by G.P. Putnam’s, 1921. Tall thick 8vo. 8.5 x 10.8 in. xvii, [1], 387, [1]; x, 416; xi, [1], 410; xi, [1], 397, [1]; vii, [1], 266, 170 pp. With 1 large folding colour panoramic view of the PPIE, 60 colour plates, 539 photo plates & illustrations. Uniformly bound in brick-red cloth, lozenge gilt illustration front cover by Perham Wilhelm Nahl (1869-1935), of the famed “Thirteenth Labor of Hercules” forcing the giant cliffs apart, gilt lettering on spines, t.e.g. (minor shelfwear, occasional light foxing & toning), still a VG bright set from the library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. First edition of this expansive and lavishly illustrated report on the very successful 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, CA which managed to attract not only 19 million visitors (some of them on weekly, or monthly basis), but also squeak out a profit of $ 1 million, or approx. $ 35 million in 2024 dollars (just a rounding error for one of the Bay Area tech giants). Along with extensive details on the organizing, construction, operations, and advertising for the Fair, the author has included extended sections on examining the role of Women, and the Women’s conferences and building at the PPIE, as well as the impact of significant breakthroughs in treating infectious diseases, such as Yellow Fever and the Plague, and their importance to San Francisco as well.
