The story was written in November, 1847 and first published in English in a small collection called A Christmas Greeting to My English Friends just after Christmas, 1847. It is the story of a mother who loses her child, and of her battle with death. She proves willing to sacrifice everything to get her child back, until at the end she is led to accept her destiny.
