Among other exploits, this book recounts Johnston's discovery of the Okapi, a creature that looks like a cross between a zebra and a giraffe. It was 1901 when Johnston became the first European to prove the animal's existence. Today they can now be found in zoos around the world, but for centuries Okapi had been the stuff of legend. The author spent most of his life exploring in Africa and serving as a British official. He wrote many respected books on the subject.
