About This Item

Chattanooga, TN: Davenport Hosiery Mills, [Andrews Printery], [1923]. 8vo. 4 x 9 in. 48 pp. Colour-illust. title, numerous colour illustrations, photo illustrations. Colour-illustrated blue softcovers, Japanese-inspired cover art of woman in kimono holding paper umbrella, decorative lettering (minor rubbing, dustsoiling, very minor spotting), still VG- copy. Second edition of this manual intended to assist “the thousands of stores and salesgirls” in understanding and marketing Davenport Hosiery silk hose. The author has incorporated short chapters on the history and origins of silk culture in Japan and China, and then finally displaying the reeling silk and winders in the Humming Bird Throwing Plant in Chattanooga. Many of the photos show women textile workers sewing hose, looping, inspecting, and then later finishing & branding the boxes. One of the concluding chapters includes specific instructions on how salesgirls were to demonstrate putting on the silk hosiery, as well as laundering, and wearing.
