A handwritten letter from the author loosely inserted reads: "Dear Mr and Mrs Knight, it gives me the very greatest pleasure to be able to send you, at last, a complimentary copy of my new book The Story of the Pendulum Clock. In it, you will see many familiar clocks - your own! Still, however, [...] unpublished the pictures of your fine Japanese "lantern" clock and the little pillar clocks. These, deo volente, will appear in my next and final volume of the series "Weight-driven Chamber Clocks of Holland, 1550-1850; and An Introduction to the Clockmaker's Art in Old Japan."
