About This Item

Altrincham: John Sherratt and Son, 1977. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. 10" by 7.5". Not Stated . A signed first edition of this sweeping history of the Pendulum Clock, featuring a letter by the author loosely inserted. Looking at the history and development of the pendulum clock. The first edition of this work. Featuring a colourful frontispiece and numerous further plates in black and white. Signed by the author to title page. A handwritten letter from the author loosely inserted reads: "Dear Mr and Mrs Knight, it gives me the very greatest pleasure to be able to send you, at last, a complimentary copy of my new book The Story of the Pendulum Clock. In it, you will see many familiar clocks - your own! Still, however, [...] unpublished the pictures of your fine Japanese "lantern" clock and the little pillar clocks. These, deo volente, will appear in my next and final volume of the series "Weight-driven Chamber Clocks of Holland, 1550-1850; and An Introduction to the Clockmaker's Art in Old Japan." I will find it necessary to visit Amsterdam (its Rijksmuseum) so that the illustrations for the "Dutch part" of the book shall be reasonably adequate in number and variety. Needless to say, a copy of the fourth volume will be forwarded to you when completed (within two years, I hope). I trust that you are both in good health and that the present book will provide you with [..] interest. With many regards and all good wishes,"signed and dated 1977.Complete with unclipped dust wrapper. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally lovely. Dust wrapper unclipped and very smart with minor shelf wear only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Fine
