Illustrated with a lovely frontispiece depicting a stag.'The Story of a Red-Deer' by J. W. Fortescue is the story of a red deer and the 'treacherous' life that he leads in a forest.This novel was a precursor to the likes of novels such as 'Bambi' by Felix Salten, which also depicted a coming-of-age narrative through the lives of deer.John Fortescue (1859-1933) was a British military historian, who also served as the Royal Librarian and Archivist at Windsor Castle in the early 1900s. Illustrated bookplate from prior owner, a Reginald Cossley Batt. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with minimal edge wear to spine and extremities. A few marks to boards, with a bit of discolouration to margins and spine. Prior owner's illustrated bookplate to front pastedown. Ink inscription from prior owner on front endpaper. Paste downs are age-toned with a bit of spotting. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and very clean throughout, with just a bit of age-toning to margins. Frontispiece is very bright and clean. Very Good
