About This Item

London, England: Atlantic Books, 2010. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. London, England: Atlantic Books, 2010. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 180 pages. The author's sixth novel. Damon Galgut's second finest achievement. The first appearance of the title in hardcover and in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. The American Edition is a Europa softcover original only. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Damon Galgut's "In A Strange Room: Three Journeys". Being the author's preferred full title, the journeys being that of our anti-hero's as "The Follower", "The Lover", and "The Guardian", unraveling in Greece, India, and Africa. It is a formally innovative novel, but with none of the pretentiousness and obscurantism that often mark so-called "experimental" works. "I doubt if any book in 2010 will contain more memorable evocations of place. A beautiful book, strikingly conceived and hauntingly written" (Jan Morris, our greatest writer on place) . Damon Galgut was born to write, has published eight novels (as of 2021) and a short story collection. This body of work is all the more impressive because by his own admission, Galgut is a slow, painstaking writer, who still writes longhand on notebooks. Until recently, he remained a relatively obscure figure, known to and admired by mainly British and South African readers and fellow writers, who were fortunate to have discovered his work as it unfolded, developed, and matured over time. All that has now changed for good. We have quite a bit of catching up to do with this literary artist who is, indisputably albeit belatedly, the living definition of writer's writer. An absolute "must-have" title for Damon Galgut collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen-marker on the title page by the author: "Damon Galgut 10/10/10". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed and publication-year dated copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (British) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: The first appearance of the title in hardcover. Precedes and should NOT be confused with the American Edition, which is a Europa softcover original only. A rare signed copy thus. Shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2003 for "The Good Doctor". Shortlisted for the Booker Prize, yet again, in 2010 for "In A Strange Room". Winner of the Booker Prize, at long last, in 2021 for "The Promise". One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DAMON GALGUT TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1848873220.

Synopsis

South African writer Damon Galgut’s novel, In A Strange Room, provides the reader with a protagonist, Damon, traveling around the world. Initially he is trying to get over a former lover, but by the end he feels that he is trying to escape from his own nature and repeated past failures. Galgut points out that he considers memory to be the real subject of the book. He elucidates the truth that none of us remember the same events in the same way, and with that, casts a beguiling spell on the reader as he describes three different journeys he took, one where he was in the role of the follower, one the lover and one the guardian. Certain themes resurface throughout Damon’s wanderings, including his unceasing drive to keep moving and his inability to form lasting relationships.
