First edition, first state binding, variant with author's name in white on spine (no priority thus). 171 pp. Publisher's lavender illustrated boards. Very Good with typical toning to boards, rubbing along bottom edge, slight wave to text block. In a Very Good unclipped ($2.75) dust jacket with sunning to spine panel and along edges, slightly chipped at extremities. The first publication of one of the most popular plays of the 20th century, which inspired a film in 1951. It tells the story of down-and-out Southern belle Blanche DuBois, who has moved in with her sister, Stella, in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

Synopsis

A Streetcar Named Desire is a play written by Tennessee Williams that opened on Broadway on December 3, 1947.The story dramatises the life of Blanche DuBois, a Southern belle, after going through a series of personal losses, leaves her aristocratic background seeking refuge with her sister and brother-in-law in a New Orleans apartment building. Considered to be Williams’ most popular work, it is one of the best and most critically successful plays of the 20th century. The play has inspired many adaptations in other forms, notably producing an acclaimed film that was released in 1951.
