About This Item

Lovely copy of E. B. White's first children's book, originally published in 1945.
The book is in excellent condition, with a slight bump to the base of the spine, and a tidy ex libris sticker. The boards are plain tan with black text to the spine.
The book appears to be unread.
The beautifully illustrated dust-wrapper is by the famous artist Garth Williams, whose illustrations are throughout the book. This was his first commission as an illustrator.
The dust-wrapper is price-clipped and slightly faded in colour to the spine.
The blurb on the dust-wrapper front flap references Charlotte's Web, which dates the publication to post-1952, and the publisher is named as Harper and Row, which pushes the publication further forward to post-1962 when separate publishers amalgamated.
Not the earliest edition then, but still a beautiful copy of a classic book.

Synopsis

Published in 1945, Stuart Little was E. B. White's first children's story. It is the tale of a young New Yorker named Stuart Little who had the "shy, pleasant manner of a mouse" and in fact, is an actual mouse. In 2005 a hardbound edition of the book was published to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the first edition of Stuart Little .

Reviews

On Mar 20 2019, a reader said:
This classic remains timeless. E.B. White is a master in giving children an engaging story while weaving nature lore and nature facts throughout. Children identify with short statured Stuart Little who must navigate the world of large people with his wits and fortitude. Children follow his adventures all the while subtly learning about the lives of cats, birds and even flora around him. Highly recommend.
