About This Item

London: Macmillan, 1884. Book. Very Good. Cloth. First Edition. Octavo, black cloth covered boards with gilt spine titles. xii, 414pp + ad leaf. A simple discreet modern rebind. AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. John Neville Keynes (1852-1949) was an economist and father of the more famous economist, John Maynard Keynes. He held a lectureship in Moral Science at Cambridge University from 1883 to 1911 and was elected as Registrary in 1910; an office which he held until 1926. He divided Economy into "positive economy" (the study of what is, and the way the economy works), "normative economy" (the study of what should be), and the "art of economics" (applied economics). The art of economics relates the lessons learned in positive economics to the normative goals determined in normative economics. He tried to synthesize deductive and inductive reasoning as a solution to the "Methodenstreit". His main works were "Studies and Exercises in Formal Logic" and "The Scope and Method of Political Economy". This volume is in excellent condition., with a tight, clean, professional, modern, fresh cloth binding and sparkling. clear gilt spine titles and rules. The pages are free of any creases, tears, stains, foxing etc. There is a neat copper-plate prior owner signature in the upper corners of both pastedown, free front end-paper and half-title. Also there is a modicum of neat diminutive underlining and marginal notations in symbolic logic appearing in some sections but not others. One signature appears very slightly misaligned when the book is closed but not when it is open, and it is absolutely tightly anchored and not loose. Despite the minor flaws noted, an attractive, clean, neat and undamaged copy of this rare first edition. Very good plus..
