Both hinges are cracked with exposed netting and binding is loose. Heavy tanning to text block edges. Boards have visible rubbing and heavier bumping to corners. Fair crushing to spine ends as well.

Very Good/Near Fine. 8vo., 234pp. Sharp First Edition in the First State with the title page integral to the gathering and not a Cancel, and the copyright statement being 31/8" wide. Bound in green cloth with beveled edges. Spine titles in gilt. Top edge gilt. Square, tight and clean throughout with some fairly minor page edge toning. Light wear to spine ends and tips. Contemporary ownership signature on front paste-down. A couple of pages roughly opened. A very pretty collectable copy of this early Howells travel title and quite uncommon in the First State. (BAL #9555).

Brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine. front free endpaper is missing. Ex-Library copy, with expected embossing and inscriptions. Pages are moderately tanned with mild foxing to endpapers and text block edges. Heavy cracking to hinges and gutters, with exposed netting. Binding is mostly firm. Occasional thumb-marking present throughout. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with notable bumping and scuffing to corners, and rubbing to surfaces. Heavy tanning to spine and edges, with visible crushing and fraying to spine ends. Book has a pronounced forward lean. Small split to spine end.
