About This Item
London: Constable and Company Ltd., 1927. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. This is Thomas Burke's first long novel- a full-length, crowded, tremendous novel of London of to-day (1927) A book at once beautiful and sinister; a thing of dramatic incident and swift poignant emotion set against a living, breathing background of north-east London squalor. Book is in near fine condition, with faded spine and slight fade to top of front cover and slightly bumped at spine ends. It is inscribed by Burke, who comments on the fep, " My first attempt at a long novel. Written 1925-6 and serialized in New York 'Bookman' while I was writing it. One installment ahead. MS destroyed.( I assume that mean manuscript). Jacket is very bright, with minimal wear to spine ends and top corners. Price of Seven shillings and Six Pence on front cover flap. Price notations in pencil by bookseller on lep and verso of back cover. A wonderful and rare collectible in fine condition.
